Responsive (or adaptive) layouts are a hot topic right now, and for good reason: they let us serve an appropriate UI to any device loading a site. Future versions of Drupal will be responsive out of the box, but with some planning you can create beautiful, bandwidth-friendly, responsive websites today in Drupal 6 or 7.
