Responsive Drupal Theming: Beyond the Media Query

Responsive (or adaptive) layouts are a hot topic right now, and for good reason: they let us serve an appropriate UI to any device loading a site. Once you've created a responsive design, how do you wrangle Drupal into being a mean multi-screen machine when it was originally created as a desktop-only interface?

Future versions of Drupal will be responsive out of the box, but with some planning you can create beautiful, bandwidth-friendly, responsive websites today in Drupal 6 or 7.

Slides available for download

During the session we will...

  • Learn what it takes to set up a mobile-first responsive layout in Drupal, relying on your mad theming skills or an appropriate base theme.
  • Use JavaScript to create responsive images and video.
  • Embrace feature detection to progressively enhance websites the smart way.
  • Strongarm layout-influencing modules (like Panels), forcing them to deliver mobile-first output using CSS3 media queries.
  • See demos that will rekindle your faded romance with Drupal theming.
