Outsource Drupal Permission check to Varnish

One of the biggest challenges regarding Drupal and Performance is having a big amount of logged in concurrent users using your system. There are already some universal techniques that are considered best practice to be done if you have such cases, but there are also techniques that are more specific.

A client recently requested from us to make a project where at specific hours a lot of students should be able to log in and check their online materials, materials also restricted based on role permissions. The big number of concurrent users expected at specific moments forced us to think out of the box and made us solve the challenge in an intriguing way that I would like to share.

In this session / showcase I will:

- Show you a different approach of outsourcing work (in this case permission check) from Drupal to Varnish in order to deal with the big number of concurrent users.
This includes presentation of custom module that extends panels and adds additional caching interface based on permissions, specific use of Varnish ESI and configuration + the way of thinking we had in building these.

- Share the problems we had during building this custom caching solution and the way we solved them. I will also explain in detail what Edge Side Includes in Varnish are, why we needed them and the specific way we used them in this case.

- Expect feedback and eventually ideas of how we can extend this, wrap it up and contribute/share to the community.

This session requires knowledge of both how Varnish and Drupal caching works.

Using Drupal as an Application Development Platform

Drupal isn't a content management system. It's an application development platform that happens to ship with a great CMS as its default implementation.

Look at any chart comparing features of development frameworks and you'll see user management and authentication, forms management and validation, data storage, database migrations, internationalization and translation, MVC model with flexible templating, unit testing, and caching. Sounds a lot like Drupal.

We'll look at why Drupal is an ideal application development platform for apps beyond content management, talk about where Drupal can improve in these areas, and look at an example application.

You'll leave the session inspired try Drupal for your next web development project, even if what you normally think of as content management isn't involved at all.

Engineering for the 80%, too.

There's been a huge push in this community to "Design for the 80%". The idea is that you want to make Drupal really easy for 80 percent of the people who use it. This usually involves setting sensible defaults in form values, and putting things where most people would expect to find them. It means focusing on the usability problems that will affect 80% of the people who use Drupal, and ignoring (or at least setting as a lower priority) the crazy edge cases. I want to suggest that we start engineering for the 80%, too.

What I mean by this is two fold.

1) I don't want Drupal to be engineered for edge cases.

Example: at least 80% of Drupal 7 sites will be running on MySQL, MariaDB, or comparable systems, but Drupal's new database abstraction layer (though awesome) was engineered for that other 20%. This is great for everyone who has been unable to try Drupal due to internal policies, infrastructure limitations, or other political matters. But what about Drupal's loyal followers? Is it really any better for any of us? What about the little guys - the non-profits and mom and pops who now can't run Drupal 7 because their shared hosting account can't support it?

2) I don't want Drupal to contain so many layers of abstraction that the barrier to entry becomes too high.

With every release of Drupal, we introduce a new layer of abstraction. In Drupal 6 we got a fancy new theme layer. In Drupal 7 we have a fancy new DB abstraction layer, we have the page-render drill-down, and who the heck really understands the menu system anymore?!

When I first started working with Drupal most of the code was written in plain logic. This means that anyone (programmer or not) could open a file and read it. They could see what was going on, catch bugs, and propose changes.

Today, there are a lot of smart people who have opened up a file to read it, seen a lot of stuff they didn't understand, closed it, and moved on. The more sophisticated our code gets - the more object oriented, the fancier, the more powerful, the faster - the fewer people who can read or understand it. This means our potential pool of contributors is shrinking.

Drupal didn't get to where it is today because it had the best code of any CMS - it got to where it is today because of the size, diversity, and involvement of it's awesome community (that's you!). Is improving our code worth loosing that edge? Is there any way we can continue to improve the code, without loosing potential contributors? Is there any way we can keep the code manageable for the 80% while building our layers of complexity behind the scenes?

How does Drupal Security Stack Up?

Let's come and talk about how Drupal's Security fits into the bigger world of web application security. Are we doing well compared to other systems? Are we doing poorly? What can we do to make our security even better than it is?

This session will explore the current process that a vulnerability follows from a researcher finding it to a fix being developed, to a release on drupal.org to that fix being deployed on your site. We'll brainstorm all the ways it might get blocked along the way and think about ways we can make sure more vulnerabilities complete the process.

Then we'll dive into other systems and see how they handle vulnerabilities. Expression Engine, Jive, Wordpress, Joomla, Sharepoint - what are their security processes like? What are their policies? Again, we'll take a guided discussion tour of these systems to help identify how we can make Drupal's processes better.

The Drupal Staging Problem

I'm using Dominique De Cooman's term, "the Drupal Staging Problem," to refer to the trouble that most large Drupal sites have. When a team collaborates on a site, and when a site has both a staging and live copy, it's a battle to keep data and files up-to-date across the different servers.

There are a number of partial solutions to this problem. Or at least, attempts to solve it. The original solution, still popular, is to simply copy an entire database from a live server down to development and staging servers. More recently, there a whole array of modules that address at least one aspect of the problem: backup_migrate, features, deploy, ...

This presentation focuses on one of these recent modules, site_update. This little-known module may be just the thing to solve this problem on your next Drupal site! I'll give a brief explanation of the problem, how site_update attempts to solve it, and give a live demo and Q and A.

MailChimp 2.0: Anatomy of a Drupal module rewrite

MailChimp is a leading and very innovative provider of email marketing services.

I first wrote the MailChimp Drupal module for a side project I was working on towards the end of 2007. It was my first standalone module, and the first one I posted on drupal.org. That module, and every update since, has basically offered the ability to synchronize a site's users with one or more MailChimp lists based on role, in addition to standalone subscription forms. Over the years, the module has grown in popularity along with the MailChimp service itself, and there are now nearly 4500 reported installs. Still modest, but a sizable base which needs to be taken into consideration when releasing updates.

I quickly faced a challenge many contributors encounter as their modules grow in terms of usage and complexity. These challenges include finding the time to maintain and support the module and adding new features when there is no support from a client or employer. In this case, MailChimp came to the rescue and partnered with ThinkShout in late 2010 to sponsor the module. We agreed to maintain and support the current Drupal 6 version and rewrite the module for Drupal 7, for which we recently released a stable version.

This session will discuss the process we went through in converting 4 years of technical debt, accumulated over 2 major Drupal releases, into a flexible and scalable module taking full advantage of many major new features in Drupal 7. In addition, I'll discuss our mutually beneficial relationship with MailChimp and how they are supporting the Drupal community.

When you're building your next Drupal project, The chances are pretty good that at some point you'll find Drupal is doing it wrong. The good news is that Drupal 7 core alone gives you around 80 opportunities to "make it right."

This session is way more than staring at a boring slide deck.

We'll crack into some code and check out some of the most popular alter hooks, and learn how to use things like hook_form_alter() and hook_menu_alter() (arguably the most "normal" _alter hooks).

Then we'll get really evil, and work through some new fun ones, like hook_block_view_alter() and hook_page_alter().

Then when while we're at it, we'll show you how you too can add your own alter hooks to a custom module. (So other developers don't have to say, "You're doing it wrong").

I'm not going to lie, there will be code. But, never fear! We're going to stay at a fairly basic level. If you're scared of writing a module, come anyway! Here's the best part: you may not even need a custom module.

Simple DevOps Using Jenkins

You will learn how to install Jenkins, use it to automatically backup Drupal sites, promote changes from development to staging to production, roll back failed changes, and perform some simple automated tests. The target audience is individual developers or small shops, and the goal is show that sophisticated DevOps doesn't have to have a lot of overhead, and can pay for itself quickly.

This presentation will cover a simple setup of a Jenkins (it can even run on your laptop), and a set of scripts will be demonstrated that enable the following workflow:

* Run Drupal Cron from Jenkins via drush
* Create backups
* Restore from backups
* Refresh a development environment with the database from live
* Update stage, triggered on a commit to version control
* Update production, manually triggered after testing stage

If the internet connection permits, as much as this will done live as possible; slides and screenshots will be a fallback. Electronic copy of the scripts and other files will be provided, so that attendees can modify and use them.

Most Drupaleros have had clients that send detailed design comps and say, "I want a site that looks just like this" -- but the design hasn't taken Drupal into account. That's not going to change. It's not entirely a bad thing, either. The topic of this session is how to steer those expectations bundled with the PSD into an iterative design process that stays flexible through the entire Drupal development cycle.

The session will be broken into two parts.

1) Approaching the design comp as a concept

We're going to look at a sample layout and identify some of its abstractions.

Thinking of a layout as populated by UI components
Anticipating areas where the design will likely change
Dummy content that still gives away a genre

2) Strategies for a flexible theming process

An iterative design process does not have to abandon the design comp. I'm going to cover some Drupal tools and suggest a process to build a layout around your content, instead of fitting content as an after-thought.

Distributing Drupal Content Through Custom Feeds

At Common Sense Media we partner with several well-known companies (Best Buy, NBC Universal, Comcast among others) who are licensed to re-package our reviews of various media content available on our site. In fact if you watch TV and have children you are likely to have made use of our reviews as they have been added to channel guides for parents to keep track of what their children watch.
We were tasked with the re-engineering of the daily feeds that provide our partners with this data as the old system was unscalable and hard to extend for the new features that our clients have been requesting. We've designed, built, and deployed a new system that uses a custom Drupal module that is integrated with the Services contrib module in Drupal 6. This custom module was designed to pull data kept mostly in CCK for distribution in XML and/or JSON, remain performant for even very large data sets, and keep current within short time frames while being extensible for future requirements. The module acts as a facade to an engine that uses PHP5 OOP and employs Unit testing for each of the major classes that comprise the system. For the current version we opted to pull data using SQL since using Views for simple data transfer seemed to incur too much overhead to be lightweight but the system maintains modular access to data so that future versions of Views and Solr can be swapped out without effect on the related classes if/when we decide to go in that direction. Real-time data is maintained using the module's nodeapi for concurrence with editorial entries.
We'll explain how we came about this strategy, how we built it, and how we hope to extend it going forward.

This session will cover progressing beyond simply configuring and using views to creating and modifying views programmatically with both views hooks and views templates.

Despite not being a part of Drupal 6 or 7 core, Views has become a cornerstone to nearly every Drupal site. And while Views provides some wonderful out of the box tools such as exposed filters, paging and sorting, it's often frustrating for developers who are accustomed to creating complex sql queries and other data manipulation to work within the confines of the standard views user interface. This presentation will aim to provide developers the information to break them free of the views ui.

Powering Drupal with nginx (Engine-X)

The world of high-performance tuning is getting turned on its head by this new(-ish) entrant into the world of web servers and reverse proxy caches. nginx (pronounced "Engine-X") is an unusual beast because it serves as both a reverse-proxy cache (similar to Varnish) and as a web server (similar to Apache).

nginx has a few advantages over other high-performance software out there. Its lower level of resource requirements lets you serve more pages with less processor power and memory usage. It's capable of high-performance SSL, meaning you can make a secure experience for your authenticated users. And it includes many of the conveniences of other reverse-proxy cache software such as silly-fast static file delivery and variable expiration of dynamic content for anonymous users.

This session will also cover a short comparison between nginx and other solutions such as nginx vs. Apache and nginx vs. Varnish (with an Apache back-end). As you might expect, nginx requires that you have a hosting provider that supports it or that you have root access to a server (virtual or physical).

Adding & Editing Content & Images on your Site using WYSIWYG

When I develop a Website for a customer, one of their biggest pain points seems to be gettting content to be properly formatted in their pages. They don't know HTML and so it's important to help them set up a WYSIWYG environment.

The second pain point is putting images into their content without having to become an expert in photoshop or some other program just to get the size image that they need.

In this session we'll be going over setting up a WYSIWYG interface and in combination with several modules, we'll also set up a fairly easy to use method for getting uncropped, improperly sized images into their content with the correct cropping and size.

Internet Scale: Building the "Drupal Borg"

The traditional “Cluster” architecture has been around the web since the 1990s. This tried and true model has supported 1,000s of large sites on any number of platforms. However, it has some serious drawbacks: these patterns lead to a high cost per site, are still fairly inflexible, have relatively low ceiling on scale, and retain some distressingly "rube-goldberg-esque" aspects.

Modern web infrastructure models break out of these traps by favoring more uniform systems for deploying applications. Leaders in this space include Google (who’s internal hosting resource is actually called “borg”) and Heroku (who wanted to call theirs “borg” until they found out that’s the name Google used).

Cloud infrastructure is accelerating this advance by democratizing the scale of computing necessary to use these techniques. If we’re to reach a future where Drupal is powering millions of sites and globally available for anyone to start using with minimal cost/friction, creating a Borg modal for Drupal would be a great help.

LEMON- Drupal diseases and cures

Modern Theming: Beyond Preprocessing and .tpls

Anyone with experience theming Drupal knows that on a complicated project template files (tpls) can start to stack up, making your project harder to maintain. Fortunately, with Drupal 7 it is much easier to than ever before to handle theming configuration in ways which avoid the pileup of template files and make theming development easier and more accessible to the themer and the back-end developer alike. There are also technologies like LESS that can speed up other aspects of creating themes.

This session will cover the use of view modes and field formatters to handle display issues. You will learn how to create new view modes and formatters in code and how that can streamline your development and theming processes. We will also cover how the Display Suite module can be used to create view modes and keep them in code for deployable theme configuration. Additionally, we will look at LESS to see how creating styles can be so much better than it used to be.

Beans, Beans - They're Good For Your...Editors

This session will introduce the Bean module, developed for Energy.gov by Treehouse Agency.

Bean allows the creation of fieldable block entities. Similar to node types, different block entity types can be created with different fields and configurations. This allows your editors to create blocks with the ease of creating a node, without needing to write code or deal with a complex admin. The session will demonstrate how to create Beans, both in code and in UI. The session will also show different ways of using block entities, including the Blockreference module, which allows editors an easy-to-understand way to place blocks within a node, and demonstrate how Beans can be used to provide an alternative method of creating Views-driven blocks.

Using 960 Grid, it is much easier and faster to build a web page than it is to build without it. By using 960 Grid, you also automatically solve the many tedious issues of CSS, especially where browser compatibility is an issue. With just a small amount of CSS knowledge, you can build great web pages. In the first half of the session, we will build a basic web page.

Then, taking that webpage, we will create a brand new theme totally from scratch. (Drupal 6.x). We'll start with a totally empty .info file and using the webpage we created, build the page.tpl.php template page. By the end of the 2nd half of the session, we'll have a working template.

The session will be easier to follow if you know a little bit about CSS and the PHP we use will be limited to "<? print $variableName; ?>", so you won't need to know much about that.

State of Media in Drupal 7 and beyond

Handing media has always been a painful feature in Drupal. With Drupal 7, changes to Drupal Core provided major steps forward. Drupal Core now includes file and image fields which provide users with the basics. With many of the new drupal hosting solutions we find a super-site system of some sort; Drush, Aegir, Pantheon, Gardens, etc. acting as a sites manager.

The difference in role between administrator and multi-host administrator or administrator and multi-domain multi-host administrator is narrowing. What can we do to help the blooming drupal administrator as he or she becomes a systems adminstrator or network systems administrator? How about release some modules.

TZO began experimenting with network tools on a drupal site during the lifecycle of D5, and we are deploying our updated Dynamic DNS site on D6. With DNS, Headers, Ping, Traceroute and Whois our five networking assistance tools based in part on work required by that site and as a result of our early experiments we will be advancing support for the network tech role.

With the network or site administrator in mind but a drupal developer or site designer in mind too they are built in the form of D6 modules and use common Curl and PEAR libraries for their networking components, making them drupal-easy to add to your site if this functionality is something you could use. For an installation walkthru and demonstration of them, and their development teardown if time permits, vote and attend for this session. I will introduce them one by one and demonstrate their methods and interfaces.

With more of this type of hosting structure expected next year, and at least as much being requested in job applications you could add these modules to your intranet, your support desk, your troubleshooting or faq pages, or just call them in secret to confirm your user's input about their domain config and extend your networking skills and capability.

Scaling, and supporting 200 major artist sites in the cloud

In late 2010, a major media company began exploring the option of consolidating all of their sites to a single hosted web platform. The internal team had been very successful in site deployment, feature development, innovation, integration and customization of business services. The customer reached out to Acquia to see if the media company’s Drupal platform could be changed to provide them with the best of both worlds.
Despite the success of the existing Drupal platform it faced a number of challenges including:
It was targeted to meet site development needs but fell short in operations, maintenance, and marketing team member needs.
Scalability issues caused problems with meeting business’ service level requirements. This was disruptive to the business internally and externally to artists and their fans.
The costs for the platform were fixed

Acquia provided a number of services to help migrate, stabilize, optimize, support, and manage the sites. We will present on how we extended managed cloud to support 200 sites. We will explain the improvements we added:
DNS database failover
Multi-data center high availability
Per site APC optimizations
Memcache tuning
Separated database services including replication to Solr, Syslog, and no-replication strategies
Caching strategies using the reverse proxy-cache Varnish, and the Akamai CDN
Amazon Web Services to experiment, scale, and stabilize a platform that could handle unpredictable, predictable, and growing web site loads.

We load tested this platform using Soasta for 10,000 concurrent authenticated and anonymous users across 120 sites, including four very large traffic sites with 100% authenticated users. Once their instance of managed cloud was stabilized we migrated over 120 media sites and prepared for an additional 80 sites to be added.
To help provide the enterprise tools needed by the operations teams and marketing teams we added new features to the Acquia Network and Drupal Gardens. The Acquia network provides a web based user experience for dozens of common Drupal system administration tasks including migrating sites between dev, staging, production.

Providing a versioned public API using Services

Here's my Drupal FOSS elevator pitch:) Drupal is one of many great open source projects. However, sometimes I notice people using Drupal that are unaware of the negative proprietary and closed practices of companies like Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Sony, Nintendo, Google, Amazon (AWS), _____ etc. In the last 10yrs FOSS many projects have grown from playing underdog and into very mature, stable, secure projects. Many FOSS projects are now considered innovators and best-of-breed. As time marches on and you're not running FOSS on your "device" for the majority of "what you do," I challenge you to really ask yourself why not? And if you continue to justify proprietary/non-free does it ultimately help or hurt you? I know, it sounds utopian. But it was only a few short years ago most Apple users had limited software choices. The world changes fast. Be a part of change for the better.

After the Confetti: You've Launched! Now What?

The champagne has been poured and everyone's thrilled with your awesome project. You've made it through the crazy project changes, the scope creep, the signoff that wasn't sign-off but you didn't know it, and the main stakeholders changing halfway through. The launch was flawless, twitter lit up with how awesome this new site is, and the happy dances have commenced.

You, as the developers, now need to switch gears, because you have other wonderful projects to go play on. However, your clients (who you trained on the new system) aren't self-sufficient with their new site. They just aren't, for a number of different good reasons. They still need support, but no conversation was had about what happens after the initial site build. This is a very sticky place to be, because no side is really prepared for what happens after active development.

However, all is not lost. There are ways to be able to manage this. Transitioning into support does not have to taste like the morning after too much champagne! We'll go over:

the project lifecycle
how support ties into this cycle, (how it's been missing and what the impacts have been)
a short conversation about code rot and why it's important to guard against it
how a project manager can deal with this
setting up your business to be able to recognize this
the care and feeding of support staff
what resources are available in the Drupal community to make the afterparty not the end of your rope

Sharing, liking, connecting, pages, apps... You probably want your site integrated with Facebook. If you're like me about 6 months ago, you have only a vague idea of what that means, and no clue how to do it. This workshop will explain the different ways that a website can be integrated with Facebook, what each one means, and which Drupal modules you'll need for the following:

* sharing links to Facebook
* social plugins
* the two different types of liking
* Facebook pages
* Facebook's opengraph protocol (yo Mark, what's with that name anyhow? it's nonsense!)
* a Facebook app
* site login through Facebook

The Logic and Styling of an Ubercart Cart : part 1

Following on from the presentation at http://2011.sandcamp.org/sessions/logic-and-styling-ubercart-cart, this session will discuss the customization and development of Ubercart 2.x for Drupal 6.x. It is aimed at themers with some code skill, or designers with development logistics interest.

Meeting the themeing requirements for an Ubercart installation is often simple; adapt a CSS class or enable an alternative cart pane. But what if you need to do more? What if the structure of the markup isn't quite right? What if the workflow needs modifying beyond the available settings? Do you know you can theme Ubercart without using tables (or TAPIR), that you can let your users manipulate a product's attributes whilst it's in the cart?

Standard CSS and HTML skills along with beginner's PHP is all you need to being implementing hook_form_alter and hook_add_to_cart_data to allow you to modify the customer / product interaction with your requirements in mind. You can customize nearly every aspect of the Ubercart front end with these techniques, you know how to apply them, right?

I was utterly lost when first given these tasks so I attended every Ubercart session I could. Thanks to those sessions at Drupal events in 2010 along with the help and the support of the Drupal community, I managed to get our test site ready for product this year.

At SANDCamp in January I presented a paper based on these result to help however I could and cover as much as I knew, which seemed to go well. Thanks for the great props everyone who cast votes ;-) For BADCamp I would like to offer it again. Boy, am I happy with my new home in the Bay Area :-).

First I review a few drupal skills that you use when you theme a form, module or node. These are very standard drupal skills which could help you add images, features, divs, styles, content and customize your cart in Ubercart 2.x with today. When you see them working their magic in the Ubercart context outlined above they bring happy moments which tell you the day will be good and your site will succeed and be loved.

I'd like to help you start modifying Ubercart on your site and control it's markup with the same skills you use already.

The Features module is a must when developing Drupal sites to ensure you keep as much configuration as possible in code as well as to help facilitate sharing configuration between developers and pushing updates from development to staging or live deployments.

Usability is increasingly getting popular in the Drupal Community. Dries’s keynote at DrupalCon London, re-emphasized the importance for a more integrated usability approach for Drupal 8. With such an exciting challenge ahead, vast range of features need to be tested under the Drupal umbrella and with limited usability resources, more help will be required.

Based on project goals and constraints, researchers follow different methodologies to test the usability of a product. However, the scope and focus of this session is to familiarize with one of the approaches and indeed the most widely sought - usability testing. Usually, a usability test cycle involves six steps: To identify the goal of the study, to identify and recruit target audience, to prepare for the study, to conduct the study, to analyze the data and to report the findings. The session will walk through each of steps closely and uncover the questions associated with each of them. Based on experience and academia, the presenter will also talk about best practices and things to keep in mind while conducting a study.

This session is intended for audience(s) who have interest in usability, want to gain some experience in conducting usability tests or are curious to understand how users interact with Drupal.

About the presenter: Dharmesh Mistry is the usability specialist for Acquia, Inc. He is invested in improving the usability of Drupal. In the past, he has used several usability methodologies for a variety of domains including insurance, health care, consumer electronics and mobile applications. Better Local QA Testing with Vagrant and Puppet

Many issues can arise from developers not testing with the proper versions of software on their local machines, but the average Drupal hosting stack is growing in complexity, with many sites utilizing Varnish, memcached, SOLR, and the like. Wouldn't it be great to have tools that help you manage configurations on your production environments and also test easily on developers' machines? They exist: Vagrant and Puppet.

This session will be an introduction to using the Puppet configuration management system and the Vagrant gem for setting up homogenous virtual machines.

Puppet is an open source tool that allows developers and system administrators to test and manage their servers configurations. I will cover managing a typical complex Drupal hosting configuration.

During the session, we'll write a Puppet manifest, apply it to a virtual machine, and show how a full stack with Varnish on CentOS 6 can be tested off of a local checkout of a site on a Macintosh laptop.

By now, most developers within the Drupal community have heard of the many tools and techniques used to improve Drupal performance such as varnish, memcache, solr, apc, ESI, etc. However, each comes with its own added complexity and administrative cost, so without knowing exactly what your performance bottleneck is, they can potentially do more harm than good.

Modules like Devel provide detailed information about queries being run on a particular request, but what if the time spent querying the database is only a small fraction of your overall pageload time? Profiling is the fastest, easiest way to get the data you need to make smart decisions about performance and scalability improvements.

In this session I'll demonstrate how to use the Devel module with the XHProf php extension to profile your Drupal site, how to interpret the data to find performance bottlenecks, and how to make it a part of your daily developing workflow.

Let's look back on where we've come from and how the web works so we can more forward better and faster (stronger).

This will be an overview of the methods of the web for beginners or those looking to "fill in the gaps". We'll cover topics such as:

Modern Web Typography in Drupal

Over the past two years, the state of web typography has drastically changed, especially so in Drupal. The legal, technical, and usability roadblocks preventing most of us from using web fonts before are largely gone. We can now select and apply a huge variety of typefaces with just a few clicks in Drupal and do amazing things with text that were never possible with traditional font replacement techniques.

We'll cover what changed to make web fonts work, demonstrate what can be done with web typography in Drupal today, and recommend approaches to new challenges such as selecting the right font and dealing with cross-browser font rendering.

Know where the fire is (Monitoring Drupal Sites)

Drupal shops often grow organically with staff members providing their own support. Monitoring the status of a site or equipment is often not in the equation. How can we provide monitoring and support to internal and external customers with Drupal installs and servers running both in house and remotely?

The answer is Nagios an open source monitoring system. Take a VM image or an old pc and create a system that will actively check all your Drupal sites, their servers and MySQL servers and notify you when anything goes wrong, down or gets plain overloaded. Nagios can give you the ability to know, evaluate and repair a problem before the client ever knows something is wrong.

You will still have to put out the fire but at least you will know there is smoke before anyone else.

There are many Drupal modules which integrate with Facebook in one way or another. This presentation will focus on Drupal for Facebook, the project I maintain and am most familiar with.

"Code smell" refers to hints and patterns within code that can be a tip off that something is wrong. Learning to recognize code smells is a critical skill in software engineering. If you can sniff out a bad code smell early, you can eliminate a bugs before they even happen. If not, you may find yourself needing to rip out large swaths of code (not to mention your hair) because you ran into a wall, muttering to yourself "I knew that was too hacky an approach..."

Recognizing code smells is also an important skill in Quality Assurance, code review, and evaluating potential modules to use. It can help identify code that will be difficult to unit test, and therefore easy to break.

This session will provide a practical overview of a number of key "code smells", anti-patterns, and other bad things to watch out for, in both your own code and in someone else's. Along the way we'll learn about aspects of good coding patterns and how to avoid stinky code in the first place.

If you work in or serve a paperwork-heavy industry, such as real estate, the government, education/schools, law, or sports, you may find that the delay between sending out a PDF form to complete and receiving that form back are adding delay to your workflow. What you may not realize is that your visitors could be filling out forms on your Web site/intranet/whatever, and you could be populating your existing (or soon to exist?) fillable PDFs with that data! It'd be an administrative load off your back. Worth a look, right? That's what this presentation will give you. I'm the maintainer of Fill PDF. It's a Drupal module that, in my opinion, not enough people know about. It's called Fill PDF (as you've probably guessed). You can get an initial idea of it here: Fill PDF on Drupal.org. This presentation will start with a demo and lead into a module tour. I'll highlight some cool features. Drupal's theme layer is very flexible and can accommodate just about any web design. It's important for designers to remember, however, that they're not really creating a page — they're building a complete system to house the all of the site's content. By creating the sitemaps, wireframes, and mockups, designers are actually outlining a site's feature set. Designers, not developers, determine a site's purpose and functionality.

In this session, we will talk about the importance of understanding a CMS during the initial design phase of a project, as well as how to create a Drupal-optimized design. Standard practices, tools, and Drupal-specific shortcuts will be discussed in detail.

All too often, however, projects begin the design phase prior to choosing a CMS. In these cases, it's important for the stakeholders to understand that their choice of CMS may alter their design. To demonstrate the steps necessary to complete a successful Drupal "conversion," we will present a detailed, real-world case study of the Expeditionary Learning relaunch. Four Kitchens co-founder Todd Nienkerk will describe how they and design partner Thinkso Creative translated a thorough but CMS-unspecific design into Drupalspeak — all while minimizing cost and meeting the client's high expectations.

Intended audience

This session is intended for anyone who has had to create or implement sitemaps, wireframes, and mockups. Those unfamiliar with Drupal will learn what Drupal "wants" to do and will be able to more easily prepare these materials, and those who already work with Drupal will learn tips and tools for managing the expectations of clients whose designs haven't been optimized for Drupal.

Three years after our first round of formal usability testing on Drupal 6, the UX team returned to the University of Minnesota in May 2011 to uncover usability issues and patterns for Drupal 7. A (Web) Face for Radio: NPR Builds a Platform on Drupal 7

Over the past year, NPR has developed a turn-key web platform for public radio stations. Using Drupal 7 as a base, it allows stations to quickly create a beautiful and dynamic site that leverages the NPR news story API. The goal is to eventually have up to 200 stations using this tool.

Drupal Commerce - Why It's Awesome

Drupal commerce is a new Drupal based E-commerce solution from the Commerce Guys. It’s built on D7 and uses extensive views integration, which makes it so much more easily configurable than it’s predecessor ever was. It also uses product entities, which can be a little jarring to an Ubercart convert to realize that products aren’t actually nodes. I’ll walk you through a basic setup of Drupal commerce and show you how easy it is to customize it. After breezing through some of the commerce basics, I’ll show you some of the API calls you can use to customize your site even farther, or just build some cool commerce extension modules.

Most people visualize events in a daily, weekly, or monthly calendar format, so using Drupal to create and manage calendars is a desirable feature for many sites. Since Drupal 4.7, the Calendar module has handled this need, but for Drupal 6 and 7, there is an alternative, the FullCalendar module. Calendar and FullCalendar are both built around the Views module, but their different use cases makes picking the right one for your project an important decision.

In addition to the features offered by Calendar, FullCalendar provides:

Drag-and-drop editing of events
Displaying Google Calendar feeds
Ability to display nodes, users, terms (any fieldable entity)

Caching Demystified

Caching systems are a crucial tool for scaling any application and increasing performance. They are something every Drupal site utilizes on some level, and while they are a critical component of your Drupal site, they can also be confusing to work with and when mis-configured can actually harm performance.

Aaron Welch from Cadre Web Hosting will explain in general what caching is, what it is used for, and cover some of the more common caching mechanisms out there, as well as how they work, the different types of problems they solve, how they interact, and when to use them. Included will be discussions of browser caches, local Drupal cache, opcode cache (APC, Eaccelerator), proxy caches like Varnish and Squid, memcache, and Content Delivery Networks.

The Prairie Initiative: Making drupal.org an effective place to collaborate

Ever since DrupalCon Chicago, a group of us within the Drupal Community have been rallying around an effort known as the Prairie Initiative. This initiative has two primary goals:

Improve the collaboration tools on Drupal.org so that we can do more and better work together and make Drupal better, faster.
Grow the pool of contributors by making Drupal.org a better and easier place to become a contributor - to make it less intimidating to people who want to get started contributing.

In this session, I'll talk about what the Prairie Initiative is, what it is not, what it has accomplished to date, what it's trying to accomplish in the near/medium future, and how you can get involved.

For fans of Edward Tufte, I provided a physical paper handout summarizing the presentation. I also showed a few slides with screenshots and mockups for explaining some things. I also pulled up Leisa Reichelt's slides from her Prairie presentation at DrupalCon London to give a tour of the Drupal.org onboarding UX-of-shame. ;)

Drupal as a CRM Platform

As anyone who uses Salesforce or CiviCRM with Drupal already knows, collecting contact information from users can be challenging. In order to effectively manage information about your users, you often need a separate system for managing contacts. This situation creates a wall between content and contacts, where valuable data about each lies in different systems, and integrating the two becomes cost prohibitive for most organizations. This can be disadvantageous for sites engaged in lead generation, crowdsourcing, e-commerce and other efforts that are very contact-centric.

Drupal's Field and Entity APIs have opened the doors to using Drupal as a tool for managing information other than content. This session focuses on the use of Drupal as a CRM system, taking a look at the Drop CRM project and related releases as a tool for managing contact information.

Building Beautiful, Dynamic Forms in Drupal 7

Forms aren't just for harvesting information, they're opportunities to build serious karma with your audience and set the right atmosphere on your site. In this session, I talk you through some principles that will help you deliver the warm fuzzies without getting in the way of a form's essential purpose, and we'll cover in detail how to implement several common form enhancements like in-field labels, conditional input display and on-focus style changes, among several others.

While we will be talking through PHP code, illustrating CSS styles and demonstrating some fun jQuery, feel free to attend just for the ideas. If you're a developer, you may have some ah-ha moments when we walk through how to set up and infinitely expanding registration form with Ajax, and non-developers will likely gain some insight into a range of possibilities for form enhancement that they might never have heard of.

We'll be using a default Drupal 7 installation for the demonstration, so you can bring your laptop with a clean installation of Drupal if you'd like to follow along. We'll be supplying a link to a download for all the code we use at the beginning of the demonstration.

Converting views and Content types into modules without coding.

You have labored to set up your Drupal 7 site and have created views and custom content types, and now someone wants you to make a similar site.

We will use Ctools, Bulk Exporter (part of ctools) and Features to create modules without writing a single line of code.

We will install the modules into barebones d7 install. create content types with cck and and a view, and then create the modules without writing any code!

You should be able to follow along and have your own first module.

It will help if you are comfortable with raw HTML and can read php enough to recognize the print statement.

Additional advantages:
• You can use version control software like git to keep track of your changes
• You can experiment with the views gui and revert your changes if you don't like them
• High performance sites can better cache the code
• It is easier to move code from dev sites to production sites.

The Logic and Styling of an Ubercart Cart : part 2

To extend the proposed session "The Logic and Styling of an Ubercart Cart - part 1" past the complexity cutoff for developers this session will discuss the customization and development of extension modules and feature enhancements to Ubercart 2.x for Drupal 6.x and is aimed at developers with good code skills and those with experience, or perhaps difficulties, in the implementation of Ubercart 2.x.

At TZO a Drupal website is making opensrs dns and whois lookup requests, accesses and interaction with remote product configuration systems and co-ordinate extended conditional dialogs and product configuration processes with the customer all within the Ubercart functions, on an extended product definition, as consistently as it's should.

Each one of these actions makes use of native Ubercart structures but modifies their themeable markup to enrich the user's experience. We are using Ubercart as an e-commerce manager, wherever possible we wanted to use Ubercart but as the issue queue increased, pricing by two or more attributes, dynamic product and dependancy pricing, PayPal Express checkout conflicts and navigating a modified workflow we had to extend, and push, and then patterns emerged. Good patterns. Drupalish patterns.

We learnt how to override tapir without breaking anything, to use standard drupal theming practices and dodge the table markup structures. To implement remote api interactions and feed remote user data in without compromising storage security policy. To implement hook_validate and communicate fully with users in pre-sales processes. I started to talk about these topics and demoed some micro modules we had built to help with in our learning curve of ubercart and drupal 6.x. Feedback from SANDCamp in January suggested I carry on.

TZO's site will likely launch before Camp, and we'll be ready to move on to DNS stuff again. But I'm glad for my time thus far with Drupal and believe considerable difficulties have been addressed in Ubercart - it's time for us to share, and I hope I can find an audience for slightly deeper discourse. Let's dredge some detail and difficulty from the depths of that darkly dreadful demotivating and deeply disturbing "Learning chasm' and advance all of our carts.

Believe it or not, Drupal makes theming easy!

Drupal provides the themer with a system of overrides that allows you to change literally anything on your site. Themers decide what gets printed to the screen and what doesn't - essentially what lives and dies. For this and some other reasons, themers have ultimate control.

Don't let it get to your head though. Before you can make Drupal bend to your will, you have to introduce yourself via the .info file. From there, you can control style with the CSS we've all come to love. Want to add in your own divs, regions, classes, etc? That will require copying and tweaking one of Drupal's template files (a super easy process).

Following this easy pattern, you can get most of the way there without writing PHP. Even if you need to extend the way that breadcrumbs, pagers or other Drupal elements work via the template.php file, you can usually find a friendly companion on Drupal.org who has code you can copy and use without having to fully understand it.

By the end of the class, you'll be able to create your own themes, sub-themes and rock Drupal's world like you never have before - all while fulfilling the mantra of a themer: "Make it pretty."

[The techniques you learn in this session will apply to both Drupal 6 and Drupal 7, however I will be leading the session in Drupal 7.]

The new Views user interface: How it works and how it was made

Recently, the Drupal 7 version of the Views module got an entirely new user interface, thanks to a months-long partnership between designers and engineers working for Drupal Gardens and major Views contributors from the rest of the Drupal community. Working together, we revamped almost every part of the interface, with the goal of exposing the most common functionality in easy-to-use "wizards" while still preserving the full power of the module for advanced users. The result is a totally new experience for site builders who are using Views to build sites in Drupal 7.

In this session, I will:

Go over the new Views interface and demonstrate how to use it, as well as give some background on the process by which it was made.
Discuss the interface from the perspective of new usability patterns introduced in Drupal 7 core (highlighting places where it follows those patterns and places where it creates new ones), which should be useful for anyone interested in making usability improvements to other Drupal 7 contributed modules.
Talk about lessons learned from the process of doing a design-driven overhaul of an extremely popular Drupal module.

This session will primarily focus on Views from the perspective of a site builder. Coding experience isn't necessary, though we may (briefly) discuss some of the high-level software architecture that underlies the new interface.
